Artemis II Astronaut Reports Microsoft Outlook Not Working Aboard Orion Spacecraft

An astronaut aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft, currently in orbit for the Artemis II mission, reported to ground controllers in Houston that Microsoft Outlook was not working on their device. The exchange was streamed live on NASA's YouTube channel during space-to-ground communications.

"I have two Microsoft Outlooks, and neither one of those are working," the astronaut told controllers. This communication followed an earlier request for help with network connectivity, which included troubleshooting steps such as restarting the device.

Two Versions of Outlook: A Familiar Windows Problem

The presence of two separate Outlook installations on a single device is a situation many Windows users are familiar with. Microsoft has kept parallel versions of Outlook for years, offering both Outlook (Classic) and Outlook (New) on Windows systems. The company has repeatedly extended the deadline for retiring the classic version, most recently pushing the cut-off to 2027.

The cause of the connectivity or application failure on Orion has not been disclosed by NASA or Microsoft. The issue is not expected to impact the Artemis II mission, and remote tools available to ground teams allow for software troubleshooting in orbit without needing crew intervention.

Microsoft has not issued any comments on the report.
